Senior Researcher - Atmospheric Channel Modeling (Free Space Optics)

    • Ottawa, Ontario
  • 9ghfo

Job description

Huawei Canada has an immediate permanent opening for a Senior Researcher.

About the Team:

Huawei Canada's Advanced Optical Technology Lab focuses on advanced R&D in high-performance optical communications and networking. Our expert team specializes in transmission algorithms, systems, physics, and optical network management. The lab engages in projects ranging from deep research to developing key product features, actively participating in standards organizations and collaborative research with partners. Our multicultural environment fosters innovation, mentorship, and a passion for learning. If you thrive on solving complex technical challenges, this lab is your ideal place.

About the Job:

  • Atmospheric Channel Modeling: Develop and refine stochastic and deterministic models for laser beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence (scintillation, beam wander, and phase noise) and weather-induced attenuation (fog, rain, and haze).

  • Impairment Mitigation Design: Design, simulate, and optimize hardware and software-based mitigation techniques, including:

o   Adaptive Optics (AO): Wavefront sensing and correction.

o   Spatial & Temporal Diversity: MIMO configurations and aperture averaging.

o   Signal Processing: Forward Error Correction (FEC), interleaving, and Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC).

  • End-to-End Simulation: Build comprehensive simulation frameworks in MATLAB, Python, or C++ to evaluate system performance (BER, Outage Probability, SNR) under varying atmospheric conditions.

  • System Integration: Translate theoretical models into design specifications for optical terminals, influencing the selection of laser wavelengths, tracking systems, and receiver sensitivities.

  • Thought Leadership: Maintain an active presence in the research community through high-impact publications and by monitoring emerging trends in optical wireless communications.

The total target annual compensation for this position ranges from $106,000 to $156,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.

Job requirements

About the ideal candidate:

  • Education: Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (with a focus on Communications), Applied Physics, or a related field.

  • Research Record: A strong portfolio of peer-reviewed publications in the field of FSO, atmospheric propagation, or optical turbulence mitigation.

  • Theoretical Mastery: Deep understanding of Kolmogorov turbulence theory, Rytov approximation, and electromagnetic wave propagation.

  • Simulation Expertise: Proficiency in numerical methods such as split-step Fourier transforms or Monte Carlo simulations for optical channels.

  • Experience with Satellite-to-Ground (Downlink/Uplink) or Air-to-Ground link modeling is an asset.

  • Knowledge of coherent optical communication and digital signal processing (DSP) is an asset.

  • Familiarity with hardware implementation (e.g., FPGA-based mitigation or deformable mirrors) is an asset.

  • Working knowledge of standard atmospheric databases (e.g., MODTRAN, HITRAN) is an asset.
