Job description
Huawei Canada has an immediate Permanent opening for a Senior Researcher.
About the team:
The Huawei Human-Machine Interaction Lab unites global researchers, engineers, and designers to redefine human technology relationships through user centered, hands on research. We focus on agentic AI and multimodal interaction (voice, touch, vision, gesture) across smartphones, wearables, and emerging devices—advancing agentic workflows, multi-agent orchestration, and intuitive human-AI interfaces. By tightly integrating sensing, algorithms, and systems, our prototype driven work ships directly to products, enabling seamless task delegation and human AI collaboration at scale.
About the job:
Define and advance research directions in computer vision, spatial perception, and human-centered AI.
Develop algorithms for 2D/3D scene understanding, tracking, hand and gesture recognition, depth estimation, and real-time reconstruction.
Develop efficient small-model pipelines for real-time detection, tracking, temporal modeling, and interaction-state recognition.
Integrate vision foundation models, VLMs, and LLMs with lightweight perception components to enable spatial reasoning and agentic workflows.
Optimize end-to-end vision systems for accuracy, latency, power, memory, and hardware constraints.
Establish datasets, evaluation frameworks, success metrics, and technical milestones.
Build high-quality prototypes, support product integration, and contribute to design reviews and mentoring.
The total target annual compensation for this position ranges from $127,000 - $225,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.
Job requirements
About the ideal candidate:
PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, AI, or a related field, or a master’s degree with substantial industry R&D experience.
5+ years of applied R&D experience in computer vision, spatial computing, robotics, or intelligent devices.
Demonstrated ownership of complex perception or machine-learning systems from research through product delivery.
Deep expertise in several areas, including detection, segmentation, tracking, hand pose estimation, 3D vision, camera geometry, and sensor calibration.
Experience developing and deploying compact models using distillation, pruning, quantization, ONNX, TensorRT, TFLite, OpenVINO, or NPU acceleration.
Strong Python and C/C++ skills with experience building real-time video-processing pipelines.
Track record demonstrated through shipped products, impactful prototypes, patents, or publications, with strong collaboration and mentoring skills.
