Huawei Canada has an immediate permanent opening for a Senior Principal Researcher - Decision Making and Reasoning

About the team:

Founded in 2012, the Noah’s Ark lab has evolved into a prominent research organization with notable achievements in academia and industry. The lab’s mission focuses on advancing artificial intelligence and related fields to benefit the company and society. Driven by impactful, long-term projects, the aim is to enhance state-of-the-art research while integrating innovations into the company's products and services, including LLMs, RL, NLP, computer vision, AI theory and Autonomous driving. 

About the job:

  • Lead the development strategy, technical roadmap, and key technology directions in decision-making, planning, and reasoning for intelligent systems.

  • Conduct and guide state-of-the-art research on AI Agents, Embodied AI, and Reasoning-enhanced LLMs.

  • Collaborate with internal product teams to transition cutting-edge research into production systems that impact millions globally.

  • Publish and present at top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, IJCAI, ICRA, RSS) and contribute as a thought leader in the AI community.

  • Foster relationships with external academic and industry experts to identify emerging trends and shape Huawei’s long-term research agenda.

The base salary for this position ranges from $250,000 to $600,000 depending on education, experience and demonstrated expertise.

Job requirements

About the ideal candidates:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or related fields, specializing in decision making, reasoning, or related areas; or equivalent industry experience.

  • Demonstrated research excellence with publications in premier AI conferences, such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, IJCAI, ICRA, or RSS.

  • Deep understanding of foundational and advanced techniques in AI reasoning, planning, and decision-making, particularly in connection with large-scale models.

  • Proven ability to translate research into working prototypes and scalable solutions.

  • Experience collaborating with leading industry research labs or technology companies is highly desirable.

  • Practical experience building large-scale AI solutions for decision making, planning, robotics, or multi-agent systems is a strong asset.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
