Senior Engineer - Short Reach Optical System

    • Ottawa, Ontario
  • pn8dn

Job description

Huawei Canada has an immediate permanent opening for a Senior Engineer.

About the Team:

Huawei Canada's Advanced Optical Technology Lab focuses on advanced R&D in high-performance optical communications and networking. Our expert team specializes in transmission algorithms, systems, physics, and optical network management. The lab engages in projects ranging from deep research to developing key product features, actively participating in standards organizations and collaborative research with partners. Our multicultural environment fosters innovation, mentorship, and a passion for learning. If you thrive on solving complex technical challenges, this lab is your ideal place.

About the Job:

  • Develop models for high-speed optoelectronic components for short-reach transmission systems including optical modulator, laser source, optical drivers, TIA circuits, photodetectors (e.g., PIN diodes, avalanche photodiodes (APDs)) etc.

  • Develop fiber channel models including single- and multi-mode and hollow-core fibers for short-reach transmission systems (e.g. polarization mode dispersion, multi-mode dispersion and multi-path interference).

  • Based on theoretical modelling, simulation and experimental characterization, investigate the impact of device impairments in high-speed applications such as driver nonlinearity, laser intensity and phase noise, clock jitter and TIA thermal noise, etc.

  • Develop accurate and efficient models for high-speed analog/digital devices including SerDes, analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) and digital-to-analog convertor (DAC). Investigate and characterize the impairment caused by mismatch of time-interleaving ADC and DAC.

  • Set up offline/on-line test bed to investigate pre- and post- forward error correction (FEC) transmission performance for high-speed direct- and coherent-detection short-reach systems.

  • Closely work with DSP, ASIC design and modem control teams to identify system impairments sources and provide solutions to improve performance of direct- and coherent-detection transceivers.

Job requirements

About the ideal candidate:

  • PhD/Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics.

  • Simulation and modeling experience in optoelectronic components and optical fiber communications.

  • Strong proficiency in Python, C/C++, Julia.

  • Hands-on experimental experience in optical system testing, real-time and offline performance characterization for transceivers.

  • Knowledge of digital signal processing (DSP) and information theory.

  • Industrial experience in short-reach optical communication systems is an asset.

  • Knowledge of Machine Learning is an asset.
